Design Competition
--- A design competition is a visual exercise. The subject is assigned by the Instructor and the students can
choose to use any tool that was taught and used in the class. We use the computer available in the
classroom.
--- Most design competitions are in class, i.e., you have roughly 50 minutes to do your design and at the end of
the time period you mail me (norman.soong@villanova.edu.) your design in .jpg format. The time-mark on your
email may dis-qualifies your entry. (Usually a few grace minutes are granted automatically, but several hours of
lapse time will dis-qualify your entry.) This also implies that you know how to make and mail me your .jpg
files.
--- The results will be available in an annonymous form, called a balot in .ppt format, each design is assigned
a number, for you to vote what you think are the two best designs, by number. You will receive the ballot in
your class mail. You will mail me your vote stating the two numbers that you think are the best designs, no
explanation needed. Voting terminates within 24/48 hours of posting. (The voting window may be negotiable,
since some people may not have Internet access at home.) Again, the time-mark on your email will qualify or
dis-qualify your vote. One may not vote for oneself, dis-qualified ballot.
--- After 24 hours, the vote result in three catagories, 1st place, 2nd place, and honerable mention, will be
mailed to the entire class . The 1st place winner earns 4 points and the rest are calculated on a scale based
on the number of votes they received. If you failed to vote, you forfeit all the points. (In other words, you
can not earn points from the votes you receive from the others but not voting yourself for the others.)
--- No design submission earns no points and there is no makeup for missed design competitions. One who missed
the competition may participate in the voting, just for fun, but earns zero point. Late design entries will be
included in the class collection, but earns no credit for the designer. People who failed to vote, dis-qualify
him/her-self from the design competition, i.e., no points. So the bottomline is do your design entry and do you
voting like all good citizens do, and your grades will be in good hands.
--- For those who have submitted their design but failed to vote, their design will be considered as Honorable
Mention, i.e., if you failed to vote then you are not eligible to be considered as 1st or 2nd places. Voting is
essential to earn up to 4 points.
--- There will be as many D.Comp as possible. Some of the D.Comps may be take home, usually one to two day
assignments.
--- Design competition grades outline:
Guidelines:
(Subject to unannounced modifications from class to class):
--- Based on 6 DC over 30 allocated points, then each DC worth 5 points and:
--- 1. 3 points on fulfillment, i.e., hand-in the DC entry on time,
--- 2. 1.5 points on peer evaluation votes received, subject to adjustment
by the instructor, and is prorated over the highest vote getter.
--- 3. 0.5 points for casting your vote, (You are disqualified from receiving votes
from th eothers, if you failed to vote for the others.)
--- 4. Bonus points: 1 point on 1st and 0.5 for the 2nd place winner.
All bonus points are above the points allocated for teh DC,
hence if one is extremely good, unlikely but possible,
one could get a max of 36 points for the DC.
--- If the number of DC conducted is less than 6,
then the 30 points will be prerated accordingly.
--- How does one prepare for a better grade: Never miss a DC;
--- How does one win DC: Think in terms of enticing the viewers, (Remember visualization is to convince, to
inform the viewers.)
