Grading and Assignments.
Grading will be based on assignments, exams, a research paper presentation, and a project.
Homework assignments and labs. These will be short homework assignments and longer lab exercises which are designed to give you experience with various aspects of text mining and text mining applications. 20% of grade.
Exams. There will be a midterm and final covering the material we cover in class and labs, including a few questions about presentations made by other students. 25%, 25% of grade.
Paper Review. Text mining is a fast-moving area and there are many interesting projects and tools being developed. Choose one or two current papers (published in the last two years) and prepare a two-page written report. The report should include a summary of the paper(s) and a discussion of the usefulness of the work reviewed. 10% of grade.
Project. This will involve choosing a topic of interest in this area, completing a project, preparing a writeup, and giving a 15-minute presentation on it to the class. 20% of grade.
Pairs. If you prefer you may work in pairs for the assignments and labs. With prior approval you may also work in pairs for the project. If you work as a pair on a project I expect the project to be substantially more complex, and each team member should make a separate 15-minute presentation and writeup.
Submitting Assignments: Please submit assignments
by email to Paula.Matuszek@villanova.edu. Please don't send them to any other
email addresses or I will lose track of them. Some assignments will be
demonstrated in lab on the due date rather than submitted; I'll let you
know for each assignment.
