Details
This is a three-week program sponsored by Villanova University in partnership with Science Resources and the Philadelphia Department of Recreation.
In the first two weeks:
- attend lectures and demonstrations by Villanova University science faculty who will mentor and support you as you...
- work alongside university students to explore the science and ...
- use your imagination to create "lesson plans" for the magic school, based on the scientific principles that you studied;
- learn magic tricks from a professional performing magician;
- work closely with faculty and students from Villanova's renowned theatre department to create characters that will serve as the teachers and other personnel of the magic school;
- participate in creating a story for the "School of Magic";
- create a website for the School of Magic
- earn service-learning credits
During the final week:
We will "enroll" summer camps with younger children in our "School of Magic." This will give you an opportunity to perform as a magic teacher. In addition to having fun, you will be providing a valuable community service by getting the younger children excited about science.
The basic framework for the magic school is inspired by J K Rowling's Harry Potter series of books. You'll work with a preliminary sketch of the setting, characters, and events by applying your talent and creativity to answer open-ended questions and create the performance.
