Transport time calculation for the same example
We have two networks, both with 16 nodes and the message size of 125 bytes.
One (C) is using coaxial cables and the other (F) - fiber optics.
C: A shared-medium network, with a single cable whose bandwidth 10 Mb/sec.
The average length of the cable between two nodes is 500 meters.
F: A switched network with one switch. The bandwidth of the cables is 100 Mb/sec.
The average length of the cable between a node and the switch is 50 meters.
The switch can support full bandwidth. It adds 50 microseconds to the time of flight.
What is the transport time?
For C this is 2 ? (500m / 299,792km) sec + (125 ? 8 bits /10Mb) sec = 103.3?sec.
For F this is 2 ? 2 ? (50m / 299,792km) sec + 50 ?sec + (125 ? 8 bits /100Mb) sec
Transport time = Time of flight +
