Types of interconnection networks
Depending on the number of nodes and their proximity, and the designer
communities/cultures, there are 3 types (names) of networks:
- MPP (Massively Parallel Processor network)
Connects several nodes, typically found in a row of adjacent cabinets.
Distance between nodes - up to 25 meters.
Traffic is often between all nodes.
Typically plugs into the memory bus.
Connects hundreds of nodes, distributed throughout a building or beyond.
Distance - up to a few kilometers.
Traffic is mostly many-to-one (between clients and a server).
Connects thousands of nodes, distributed throughout the world.
Distance - thousands of kilometers.
Internetworking - a connection of two or more interconnection networks.
