An example on effective bandwidth calculation
Effective bandwidth = Message size / Total latency
Total latency = Sender overhead + Time of flight + Transmission time + Receiver overhead
Unlike raw bandwidth, effective bandwidth takes into account the sender/receiver overhead and the time of
flight. It tells us how many bits per second we can really transmit over the network. Includes headers/trailers.
- Raw bandwidth --- 10 Mbits/sec
- Sender overhead --- 250 ?s (1 ?s = 0.000,001 sec)
- Receiver overhead --- 300 ?s
- Message size --- 1000 bytes
What is the effective bandwidth?
Total latency = 250 + 6671 + 800 + 300 = 8021 ?s = 0.008 sec
Effective bandwidth = 8000 bits / 0.008 sec = 8,000,000 bits / 8 sec = 1 Mbits/sec
10 times lower than the raw bandwidth!
