Association: Concepts and Processes

Association establishment requires a mechanism to locate a partner for the application process. It also involves establishing a context for the communications that will occur between cooperating peer application entities. Both parties to the association must know what semantics to attach to the data that flows between them. Both must know what level of service to expect from the network. Each party to the association must consist of elements able to communicate with the other. For example, if one process expects to send requests for remote operation of commands, the other must include a component that can interpret these requests and respond correctly.

During association establishment, the Application Entity (AE) (the particular collection of ASEs that will cooperate to provide service to the application process) must be identified. The exchange of information during association establishment also serves to define the relationship between the Application Entity and the Presentation Service and the expected quality of service to be provided by underlying network layers.

Establishing an association means gathering descriptions of components of an application's communication environment and establishing a link with a peer application on another system that has a compatible communication environment.
