Association of Research Astronomers

Cardelli, along with Derck Massa (Applied Research Corporation) continues to direct the Association of Research Astronomers (ARA), an organization whose membership consists primarily of research astronomers in non-faculty positions, particularly those supported by grants and contracts. The ARA was created to provide a forum for open discussion of the issues of concern to researcher astronomers. As part of its mission, the ARA has tried to provide useful feedback to the community, including the publishing of the results of a survey of its membership and a position paper presented to the AAS council (June 1995) outlining concerns about where the current crises in funding and jobs could lead our profession. In addition, the ARA was asked to sponsor a special session at the AAS meeting in San Antonio (Jan. 1996) on the nature and impact of policy making in astronomy.

These documents as well as general information on the ARA can be found on the WorldWideWeb: www.phy.vill.edu/astro/faculty/ara/ara_home.htm.
