The Villanova HHMI-NSF Young Scholars Program is a six-week residential program in Biology and Mathematics for gifted high school students. The program will include course work in biology with application-oriented mathematics enrichment and a substantial experimental component involving both biology and mathematics.
Themes for the 1994 Summer Program include the physiology or respiration, population ecology, and genetics. Participants will use state-of-the art equipment in two new NSF-funded laboratories. Laboratory experiences will include the use of physiographs, to record and analyze electrocardiograms, heart rates, and respiratory volumes. Enzyme assays, ultracentrifugation, measurement of basal metabolic rates, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and actual and computer-simulated experiments in genetics will also be performed.
As part of summer activities, participants will design an independent research project. This project will be carried out with the cooperation of high school teachers and Villanova Faculty during the 1994-95 academic year at the participants' home high schools.
The Villanova HHMI-NSF Young Scholars Summer Program is free for all participants. Cost of tuition, room, and board are completely covered. A weekly stipend will be provided to replace, in part, anticipated summer earnings.
