Catalog Course Description :
      Monitoring and management of computer networks and network devices; SNMP, CMIS, CMIP network management protocols and services; Management Information Base (MIB) development; performance analysis including queuing models; comparison of channel access protocols; other related topics selected by the class.

Lesson Plans :
      The course will be conducted as a seminar requiring intensive reading, class preparation and participation. Introduction to network management concepts, SNMP and MIB. Design of management agents and clients. Review the Internet protocol, and study the IP related protocols (ARP, RARP, and ICMP). Network modeling issues, a brief introduction to Markov Models and Single Queues. Explore, use and evaluate the standard tools and several public domain packages for network management and performance measurement. Exposure to some commercial products.

Attendance/work policy
      Each class member is responsible for identifying some interesting and relevant material for the class to read and discuss. You should try to attend every single meeting and come prepared to be an active participant. You will hand in the summary of the paper read at the beginning of the class meeting or submit it as requested through the course Blackboard site by the designated due time and date. No summary will be accepted past its due date. You will also hand in an evaluation form at the end of each meeting.

Each class member will also locate, study and demonstrate some of the public domain software for network management and performance monitoring.

Each student will also be designated as the official scribe for a specific class meeting and should generate a brief summary of the class discussion that will be made available for the rest of the class.

A final project consisting of either writing a term paper or developing a software application relevant to the class topic is due by December 6th.
