Course description:

The purpose of this course is to make certain the student has a firm foundation in computer fundamentals and then to build on these fundamentals using the Web and Web design to illustrate some computer concepts.  Topics include information representation, hardware components, software, operating systems, networks topologies. Programming languages including html and xhtml will be used.

The course is administered as a combination of lectures and hands-on lab sessions.  A midterm, a final exam and two tests will reinforce material presented in lecture and in the reading assignments.

Prerequisites: None

Grading:

Points will be earned and mapped to letter grades as shown below. When you have a question about an assigned grade, please resolve the issue within one week of the return of the assignment or test.

Labs

Labs reinforce and extend the lecture material.  There will be some overlap in topics.  However a clear distinction is made in regards to graded work, and that separation will be emphasized throughout the course.  Specifically, the lecture exams will cover material stressed in the lectures and reading assignments, while graded work in the labs will concentrate on issues addressed in the lab.  Notebooks will be examined twice during the semester.

Final Project

The final project is a solo or team effort in which the student will create a website using all of the knowledge gained during the term.   The project will be worked some in Lab and some at home.   Feedback during the creation of the website will be given during the term and will help the student.  The presentations of each team's website will occur during a lab session(s).

Homework and Quizzes

Homework exercises for collection will be assigned at various points throughout the semester. The combination of all homework assignments and quizzes will count for 10% of the final grade. Each homework assignment and quiz will contribute an equal share of that 10%. The contribution of each homework assignment and quiz will depend on the number of assignments given.  NOTE:  Homework will be accepted on the due date for full credit.  Homework will be accepted one week after the due date for a reduction in points.  NO Homework  will be accepted later than 7 days after the due date.   Submission by email will be used in case of absence.  Quiz:  Zero or more quizzes will be unannounced.  There will be no make-up for missed quizzes

Attendance

Attendance is key to understanding the material in the course.  It is expected that each student attend all lecture and lab meetings.  Excused absences may be granted in advance of a class meeting.  Attendance at examinations is most important.  Attendance will be graded.  NOTE:  The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Enchiridion has notified all first-year students that they will receive a grade of Y (failure) whenever the number of unexcused absences in a course exceeds twice the number of weekly class meetings for the course.  For CSC-1020 that number is 6.

Late Policy

Homework must be submitted in class on the due date. No assignment will be accepted after 7 days late. It is best to turn in whatever work you have accomplished for partial credit. Do not count on extensions.

If you must miss a test or exam, notify the professor before the scheduled time of the test. If at all possible, make arrangements to take the test early. Any test that is missed and not made up will count as zero points toward the final grade.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to conduct themselves in an ethical, professional manner. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the Villanova Academic Integrity policy.

All homework assignments and exams should be done on an individual basis unless explicitly stated otherwise by the professor. All questions about tests or homework should be directed to the professor or the teaching assistant.

If you have any questions regarding what constitutes plagiarism in the context of this course, do not hesitate to discuss them with your professor.
