My technical specialty area is computer networks. Most recently, I focus on Information access in the Web environment.  My Ph.D. dissertation, Internetwork Measurement was completed at the University of Delaware under PaulAmer.

The latest book ComputerNetworks and Open Systems, An Applications Perspective with co-author Richard Austing, was published by Jones and Bartlett in 2000.

Another significant project attempts to ease the task of finding what you want in the wealth of resources available in the World Wide Web. UrsulaWolz of The College of New Jersey is my partner in this effort.

A recent grant from NSF Division of Undergraduate Education involves study of the current state of teaching computer organization/architecture in Computer Science and Information Science programs.  Our goal is to identify ways to bring distributed expertise to the assistance of anyone who is teaching this core course.  The project will facilitate sharing and also connect people to allow mutual support.  My co-PI in this project is Deepak Kumar of Bryn Mawr College.  We would be glad to hear from anyone with a particular interest in this project.

Professional Organizations

I am deeply involved in professional groups concerned with computer science education and am a Past Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group inComputer Science Education (SIGCSE).  I am a member of the ACM Ecucation Board. I am a member of the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing)Technical Committee 3.2 on University Education.

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests include Computer Networks, Distributed Systems, Architecture and Operating Systems, as well as innovative introductory courses for nonComputer Science majors.

Spare Time

In my spare time (I remember that concept), I enjoy reading -- especially a good mystery -- and travel to almost anywhere. My cats, Brittany and Furry (short for Furris Mew-ler), wish I would not travel at all. (Cocoa-- 1986-1997 is much missed.)
